Forgive the crappy iPhone quality photo, but look at that little belly!!

So I don’t even know where to start on this post because the best thing ever happened last night.  It would be number 1 on this list of good things, and that is that we got our pug puppy, Mearl-Purvis Ponder (Mearl for short)!  She is darling, and we are in love.  She slept through the night (that is after we gave in to her whining in her crate and put her in bed with us).  K. and I are both smitten.

If you’re local and wondering if Mearl Purvis sounds familiar, you’d be right.  She’s the anchorwoman out of Memphis.  We were flipping channels watching for snow day information one time, and we somehow ended up on Memphis.  I heard the name Mearl Purvis, and I said, “That’s an interesting name,” and Kelly took to calling me that as a pet name whenever I’d get sassy (e.g. all the time).  When he asked me what we would name our new puppy, of course I said, Mearl-Purvis Ponder!  We named our last cat after the Pope so there you go.  Speaking of the cats, they’re kind of still a little freaked out/curious, but it hasn’t been quite as bad as I thought it would be so I’m hopeful we’ll all get on the same page!  We are now those people that have four pets.  Feel free to judge us.

Thankful Thursday for May 26th

Just so you know, when I start these blogs, I always in my head imagine addressing you all in a radio voice.  “Good afternoon, blog world.  It’s Thursday again, and you know what that means,” and so on and so on.  I always have to fight the urge to do that at work when I use the radio, too.  Instead of saying, “Does anybody copy?” I always have to fight not to start my own little radio show right then and there.  I don’t know what it is about the radio because I hate the sound of my own voice (especially on Snapchat), and I rarely have anything that interesting to say.  I think I just like how radio voices always remind of summer. This week has been great, but I think that’s because I’m eagerly anticipating a three day weekend, too.  So without further ado, here’s your top ten countdown of good things (say in radio voice.  It’s not really a top ten.  I don’t know how many it will be, I just was thinking in radio speak, again.)!

  • The local farmer’s market has reopened.  We went recently and wandered around.  They didn’t have all the veggies ready that I like just yet, but we did leave with two tomato plants.  They also had greyhounds to pet which made me happy.  Although I am elated to get a pug, I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for hounds.  I love Greyhounds and Italian Greyhounds, but my favorite are Afghan Hounds.  It’s just too much dog for our family, and in my experience, Italian Greyhounds are a little too skittish for our life with Fran and the other cats.

Belated Thankful Thursday from January 7th

Two posts in one day? It’s unheard of, folks!  Since I finished my Christmas posts, I wanted to do one of the updates that I missed the most—my Thankful Thursday posts (errrr…a day late)!  I like these most because it allows for me to ramble as I used to in my dear old lj days (Livejournal for you young ones).  This was my first week back at work, and the students aren’t back yet so I’m most thankful I’ve been able to slowly ease back into the 8 to 5 routine.  I’m missing spending every day at home with the kitties, but until I win the Powerball, I can’t be a stay at home cat mom.  Here’s what I’m thankful for this week.— Continue reading Belated Thankful Thursday from January 7th

Little Sarah celebrating Halloween!
Little Sarah celebrating Halloween!

Happy Halloeve, guys!  So I should probably just change these entries to “Thankful Friday” instead of “Thankful Thursday” because it seems as if I can never get this posted in time.  I know you all will all understand.  Life happens.  Plus, just like last week, Kelly and I had a date night so it couldn’t be helped.  We went to the University of Memphis to see David Sedaris do a reading.  As I mentioned over on Facebook yesterday, I was first introduced to David’s work via audio book on a road trip to New Mexico.  Kelly and I listened to three of his books on the way. I’m sure they’re great to read, too, but man was he funny doing his own reading.  He is even more delightful to see in person reading his work.  We had fifth row seats which were excellent!  If you’ve got a road trip coming up, and you haven’t discovered Sedaris, get the audio books.  You can thank me later.  So besides the amazing evening we spent yesterday laughing so hard listening to him (seriously, the entire audience laughed through the entire event), here’s the other good things and thankful moments of my week. Our second time to see the Avett Brothers live!
Our second time to see the Avett Brothers live!

Happy Friday, friends!  I hope everyone enjoyed their week.  Yesterday was a little hectic so I didn’t get a chance to post my usual “Thankful Thursday” update.  Kelly and I had tickets to the Avett Brothers at the Convocation Center so we were busy with that last night. 22220587670_1be8a01b69_o

The Avett Brothers are one of my favorite bands, but I think I’m one of the only people that wasn’t overly blown away with the show in Jonesboro last night.  Our seats were good, but the sound in the Convo seemed a little off or something.  Maybe it’s where we were at in relation to the speakers.  Maybe it’s that I kept comparing last night’s show to the intimate, stripped down show at Mud Island in Memphis a few years ago that was so incredible.  Plus, I felt like some of the show just seemed a little contrived.  I dunno, that’s just my opinion.  I still love the band and their music, and even a less than perfect show by them is still pretty good.

Enough about that, here’s my good things list for the week! Continue reading Belated Thankful Thursday for October 22nd

Besties! Another evening of watching the tube and cuddling for Francis and I. My cat "son" is cuter than your kid.
Besties! Another evening of watching the tube and cuddling for Francis and I. My cat “son” is cuter than your kid.

This week we had another trip to the eye surgeon for Kelly.  We feared that his retina was tearing again as he had a shadow starting to creep across the eye that he had surgery on, and that is classic symptom of a retinal tear.  Fortunately, there was a small piece of the retina (ewww!), flapping around that they were able to bolster by doing some laser work in the office.  We are hopeful it holds because if not, he would have to go through another eye surgery.  The laser work looks strong so the doctor is pretty confident that we’ll be good.  This has been a pretty stressful week.  I don’t know about you guys, but I’m glad it’s almost over!  Here is what’s keeping this week worth my while.

  • Grace Jones—I’ve always thought Grace Jones was a fascinating artist. I was intrigued by her life, and finally, had the opportunity to read all about it in her recent book. I’m almost finished with it, but this is a great read that I recommend!  She’s as interesting as I imagined.   I really want to read Carrie Brownstein’s memoir, too.

Ladies, make sure if you choose to get married it's to someone as fierce as you are!
Ladies, make sure if you choose to get married it’s to someone as fierce as you are! We had so much fun in the homecoming photo booth earlier this week.

It’s finally October, guys.  I’m so excited!  I love all things fall, and I’m too happy to kick off this *hopefully* cool and crisp month!  It’s homecoming week on campus so it’s been pretty busy but a lot of fun, of course.  Our nephew is coming to stay at our house for the weekend, and we can’t wait to take him to his first rugby came and college football game.  Kelly and I are crossing our fingers that he has the time of his life with us this weekend.  I’m always happy when we manage to keep them alive for several days (just kidding), and they don’t think we’re boring.  “You can think we’re weirdos, but just please don’t find your uncle and I boring.”  Without further ado, here’s the good things list in my life for this Thursday.   Continue reading Thankful Thursday for October 1st

The best grapes ever!
The best grapes ever!
    • Have you guys heard about Cotton Candy Grapes? I found them at Sam’s recently, and I decided to try them. I am happy to report, they taste JUST like cotton candy.  As in, I have already scarfed down most of the container.  My husband wants to know when they will develop funnel cake flavored strawberries?  He says, “Soon, all foods will taste like other foods.  What’s stopping them now?”  It’s a little Jetsons for me, but I really hope he’s right.  It’d be that much easier to be healthy.
    • I watched Alfred Hitchcock Presents for the first time on Hulu recently (It’s on Netflix too for those that have that), and I loved it and have binge watching ever since. I wish it had every episode instead of just select episodes, but there are quite a few seasons so that’s good.
    • I tried this Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal recently, and it tastes just like pumpkin pie. I love it. I used brown sugar Splenda instead of regular brown sugar.
    • I’ve noticed recently that all the perfumes I like in my 30s smell of a bit of fire and smoke. I like scents that smell as if I went for an evening out and somehow ended up next to a campfire. Ages ago, when I used to sit around the fire on Friday nights with my favorite South African, I used to come home and rip off everything that smelled like the fire pit, and toss it into the wash.  Now, I find it a familiar, comforting scent.
    • Have any of you tried those adult coloring books? I’m going to try them out. I can see that being helpful with my anxiety.  I have seen some really great designs, too.  My favorite, are the ones with different cities.  I saw a Paris one somewhere that I’d really like.  Do you like using the colored pencils or pens better with them?
  • I picked up a random candle and TJ Maxx the other day and loved the scent. When I turned it around, it was a Manly Indulgence: Black Tuxedo candle. I don’t know what defines a “Manly Scent” (insert eyeroll), but I bought it for the house anyway.

The thrift gods have been smiling on me recently!
The thrift gods have been smiling on me recently!

From celebrating my birthday to opportunities to stand in the sunshine and watch rugby, this week truly couldn’t have been any better.  I’ll try my best to not write a novel this Thankful Thursday, but I make no promises!

  • Thrift Finds—I am an avid thrifter, and there is nothing like the satisfaction that comes from a great “find”. It makes up for all the times you sort through racks of clothing and bins of bags and have to leave the store defeated! This week I broke out this great, wild black and white blazer.  When I put it on, I asked Kelly, “Do I look like a rich sixty year old woman in this?”  My poor husband looked perplexed!  He responded, carefully, “Do you want to look like a rich sixty year old woman?”  My answer to that is, “Always.”  It’s one of my favorite styles.  I have beat many an old lady to fab tailored pants in a thrift store.  I’m ruthless when I walk into the Goodwill.  I also was so happy to find the framed poster below.  It has a small crack in the glass in the corner, but I’ll either have it repaired someday or live with it.

Mochi, or as I like to call it “Orbs of Amazingness”!

Happy Thursday, guys!  It’s almost the end of opening week at the university, and while it’s been incredibly hectic, it’s so nice to see familiar faces back and meet new students who have joined us on campus.  Without further ado, here’s this week’s Thankful Thursday.

  • Mochi—I was elated to spy this sweet treat on campus at Sushi with Gusto now. I paid an embarrassing amount of money for it, and I made quite the scene of excitement in front of the sushi chef. He seemed to understand how happy I was since it’s so hard to find.  In general, I pick it up at international groceries on trips, but occasionally, I’ll order it online.  I don’t know if it being located so close to me in our building is great for every day, but it will be a nice treat to have once in a while.  I’ll have to try to resist those little pillowy sugar clouds.
