2016 Christmas List

Mom and Dad still ask for a Christmas list from Kelly and I (see, folks.  It pays not to have kids, you never have to grow up!), and they gave us a deadline to submit eight items  so I sent mine in today.  See below.  What’s on your Christmas list this year?

  1.  deadladies

Read this book this year, and I loved it.  I’m more selective about what books I ask for now since we have roughly four full bookshelves in our house, but this was one I’d love to reread again and again.

2. perfume

I read this book years ago, and it’s one of my favorites.  I owned it, but I some how lost it along the way so I’m trying to get another copy.

3. againstnature

I haven’t read this yet, but it’s been on my to read list for years.  I love books about hedonism and decadence taken to an over the top lavish extreme.  It’s kinda how I live.

4. spicebomb

My beautiful friend Nikki recently wore this, and I immediately had to know what she was wearing.  This is a men’s cologne, but I think it’s very unisex.  I never guessed she was wearing cologne.  It smells sexy, and now, I have to have my own bottle!

5. lordofmisrule

I love Lush products, and I haven’t tried this  yet, but I love spicy scents so I’m pretty sure I’ll love it.  They haven’t disappointed me, yet!

6.
guccirush

I seriously thought this has been discontinued and was so glad to find out otherwise!  I wore this for years in college.  It will always be one of my favorites.  It’s sexy and heavy on the vanilla which is one of my favorite scents in perfume.

7. Some kind of steam clean mop

8. buckets

Practical which I’m not usually into, but I want it.

Campfire Rebel

I'm an old fashioned bar of soap kind of lady!
I’m an old fashioned bar of soap kind of lady!

I’ve got quite a perfume habit.  I love them, and I love to buy them.  I can be a bit of a snob, though.  Also, a bit of a weirdo.  There are certain perfumes I own that I don’t dare wear at work.  They’re the sort that I know will elicit, “What’s that smell?” from the general public.  One of my favorite scents is Campfire Rebel by Pinrose that smells like you’ve sat around a bonfire all night.  To me it’s strange and mysterious and interesting, but I wouldn’t say everyone loves it.  Fortunately, not that I’d stop wearing it, the husband likes most of my scents, too.  The only one he has ever been not so wild about is an Orange Blossom I got from an old New Orleans fragrance house.  It reminds me of summers wandering in St. Augustine, but it’s a bit soapy so I kind of get it.  Most of my strongest memories are associated with scent.   Continue reading Campfire Rebel

Weekend Roundup

It’s Tuesday again, and I’m lamenting over how quickly the weekends fly by.  We haven’t been up to much lately, and it’s been nice.  Last Saturday, Kelly and I ran over to the nearby town of Paragould to check out a few flea markets.  We didn’t have much success, but it was the perfect opportunity for him to stop off at a hole in the wall restaurant that he likes, Hamburger Station.   He got his usual, ‘The Humburger” which is basically a huge burger piled with massive amounts of grilled onions.  It smelled like White Castle the entire ride back in the car, but it’s a once in a blue moon treat so I didn’t grumble too much.

Hamburger Station. Kelly loves a great dive.

I'm not sure why this knock off Hamburglar was out front, but I forced K. to take a photo by it.

Fever Dream

It is Tuesday evening, and I’m angry again.  Internet world, I am Susie Green.  I’m not joking. I’m biting off the end of a loaf of chocolate chip banana bread that a friend made me like an ice cream, the whole loaf in my hand. It’s vastly improving my mood, so there.  I’ve taken to telling everyone to “suck an egg” like we did in the schoolyard in the 80s.  It feels strangely rebellious, pulling back this insult from youth. It feels as powerful and defiant as when I would go in my closet when I was mad at my parents in 3rd or 4th grade and whisper curse words.   Continue reading Fever Dream

Thankful Thursday for September 10th

The best grapes ever!
The best grapes ever!
    • Have you guys heard about Cotton Candy Grapes? I found them at Sam’s recently, and I decided to try them. I am happy to report, they taste JUST like cotton candy.  As in, I have already scarfed down most of the container.  My husband wants to know when they will develop funnel cake flavored strawberries?  He says, “Soon, all foods will taste like other foods.  What’s stopping them now?”  It’s a little Jetsons for me, but I really hope he’s right.  It’d be that much easier to be healthy.
    • I watched Alfred Hitchcock Presents for the first time on Hulu recently (It’s on Netflix too for those that have that), and I loved it and have binge watching ever since. I wish it had every episode instead of just select episodes, but there are quite a few seasons so that’s good.
    • I tried this Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal recently, and it tastes just like pumpkin pie. I love it. I used brown sugar Splenda instead of regular brown sugar.
    • I’ve noticed recently that all the perfumes I like in my 30s smell of a bit of fire and smoke. I like scents that smell as if I went for an evening out and somehow ended up next to a campfire. Ages ago, when I used to sit around the fire on Friday nights with my favorite South African, I used to come home and rip off everything that smelled like the fire pit, and toss it into the wash.  Now, I find it a familiar, comforting scent.
    • Have any of you tried those adult coloring books? I’m going to try them out. I can see that being helpful with my anxiety.  I have seen some really great designs, too.  My favorite, are the ones with different cities.  I saw a Paris one somewhere that I’d really like.  Do you like using the colored pencils or pens better with them?
  • I picked up a random candle and TJ Maxx the other day and loved the scent. When I turned it around, it was a Manly Indulgence: Black Tuxedo candle. I don’t know what defines a “Manly Scent” (insert eyeroll), but I bought it for the house anyway.

Peg Bundy Chic

This jacket is everything!
This jacket is everything!

I can’t believe I celebrated my thirty-fourth birthday yesterday.  I remember when I was a kid, when one of my relatives turned thirty, and I thought it sounded so “old”.  I also thought that everyone should have their lives completely figured out by thirty, but my view on that has definitely changed, too!

The day was perfect.  I usually wake up before my husband does, and when I walked into the kitchen that morning, he had decorated to surprise me.  It was cute, and it was pretty funny because the night before he had stayed up late.  At some point during the night I woke up, and he still wasn’t in bed.  I called out from the bedroom, “Bedtime, Kelly!”  Little did I know, he was decorating for me!

Novel Perfumes

Perfumes!

I used to be quite the perfume collector.  I love scents, and my tastes vary with my mood.  Some summer days, I’m feeling a marine fragrance a little more, but most days, I prefer something spicy and oriental.  I used to have a carnival glass tray on my dresser filled with different bottles.  While I have slowed my purchases over the last several years, I do still love to find a new scent that excites me.

Still have the tray, but it doesn't have quite as many bottles now. I'm a little more selective in my purchases.

Throughout my searches, I often encountered praises of L’Artisan Parfumeur, but I struggled to find a place in the United States to order samples of their fragrances.  I was thrilled to finally find Luckyscent, an online store and shop out of Los Angeles that specializes in offering the “unique, rare, and exceptional.”  Fortunately, they sell samples!  Continue reading Novel Perfumes
